Tanzanian President's Husband Dies

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died on Monday, September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment for a heart condition. He was 78 years old. Mr. Ameir passed away at 8:00 AM local time at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. The announcement was made by Tanzanian Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who extended condolences to President Hassan, her family, and the nation. Funeral arrangements were scheduled for 4:00 PM on Monday in Kizimkazi, South Unguja Region, Zanzibar. Hafidh Ameir Hassan became Tanzania's First Gentleman in March 2021 when President Hassan assumed office. He was an agricultural scholar and former public servant, having previously worked in the Ministry of Agriculture and served as a lecturer at the Kizimbani Agricultural College. He was known as a retired specialist in coconut crops and was described by colleagues as a dedicated and hardworking individual who made significant contributions to the country's agricultural sector. Married to President Hassan since 1978, the couple raised four children, including Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who currently serves as a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
