Tanzania Vice President Resigns, Citing President's Desire for Change

Tanzania's Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi announced his resignation on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, stating he would leave office on September 4, 2026, after writing to President Samia Suluhu Hassan to relinquish the position. The president accepted the resignation the same evening, initiating a constitutional process to appoint a successor. Nchimbi, who has served as vice president since November 2025, said in his announcement that he was fulfilling a promise made to President Hassan on August 27, 2025, to step aside whenever she felt the need for a different deputy. He stated he was satisfied without doubt that she desired a change.
