Tamil Nadu CM announces Secretariat, Olympic City, motorsports hub for Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced a sweeping infrastructure and sports development plan for Chennai on September 3, 2026, unveiling proposals for a new state Secretariat complex, a world-class Olympic City, and a dedicated motorsports hub. The announcements, made in the State Assembly under Rule 110, aim to modernize the state's administrative capacity and elevate its sporting profile. The centerpiece administrative project is a new integrated Secretariat and Legislative Assembly complex, estimated to cost Rs 1,200 crore. The proposed facility, with a built-up area of 20 lakh square feet, is designed to consolidate all state government departments onto a single campus. Chief Minister Vijay stated the move is necessary to meet Tamil Nadu's administrative needs for the next century, citing severe space constraints at the current Fort St George headquarters. He noted that of the historic site's approximately 107-acre campus, only about four acres are under the state government's control for Secretariat use, with the remainder held by the Defence Ministry and the Archaeological Survey of India.
