Sweden Buys US HIMARS Rocket Artillery

Sweden's government has authorized the purchase of U.S.-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers, a move aimed at rapidly strengthening the nation's long-range firepower amid heightened security concerns in Europe. The acquisition, costing approximately $730 million, is part of Sweden's broader defense strategy as a new member of NATO. The first deliveries of the HIMARS systems, which are manufactured by Lockheed Martin, are expected in 2027. The deal includes about ten firing units and a significant quantity of ammunition, according to government statements and reports. Officials stated that the new systems are needed to complement existing artillery, such as the Swedish-made Archer, and to provide rapidly available capabilities compatible with NATO allies. The HIMARS launchers are designed for precision strikes at extended distances, with their munitions capable of hitting targets over approximately 250 miles away. This acquisition follows Sweden's decision, alongside Finland, to abandon decades of military nonalignment and join NATO in response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
