Suspected WWII bomb found near Falmouth Docks

An evacuation of more than 300 homes was under way in Falmouth, Cornwall, on Wednesday after a suspected 250kg American World War Two bomb was found in water near Falmouth Docks on Monday, prompting a 750-metre cordon and house-to-house evacuation visits. Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall Council established the cordon around the dockyard and urged all residents within it to leave their homes. The device was discovered off Pendennis Headland and is thought to be a 250kg US device at least 80 years old, though its identity remains unconfirmed. Superintendent Vicky Howell said specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers were on scene and that police were working closely with partner agencies to manage the incident safely. She said the cordon around Falmouth Docks had been extended since the initial discovery on Monday, and she thanked residents, businesses and the public for their patience while the incident continued. Howell asked people to keep avoiding the area and to follow instructions from emergency services personnel.
