Suchika Tariyal Wins India's First Asian Games MMA Medal

Indian fighter Suchika Tariyal secured the country's first-ever Asian Games medal in mixed martial arts on Sunday, defeating Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the women's traditional 60kg quarterfinal. The victory at the Aichi-Nagoya Games guarantees the 36-year-old at least a bronze medal, as both losing semifinalists in the tournament format receive bronze. The win marks a historic milestone for Indian combat sports, as MMA is making its debut at the 2026 Asian Games. Tariyal advanced to the semifinals scheduled for September 21, where she will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Singapore's Hui Hoon Teo and Iran's Arezou Salimighalehtaki. A victory in the semifinal would send her to the gold medal match on September 22. Tariyal's achievement is the culmination of a long and varied career across multiple combat disciplines. She is an eight-time national judo champion who represented India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and competed in kurash at the 2023 Asian Games. In 2024, she won a world title in jiujitsu before returning to professional MMA, signing a multi-fight deal with BRAVE Combat Federation.
