Sri Lankan wins first Diamond League title

Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage made history on September 5, 2026, becoming the first athlete from his country to win a Diamond League title. The 23-year-old secured the victory at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels with a best throw of 89.04 meters on his third attempt, capping a dominant season that has seen him rise to the top of the world rankings. Pathirage entered the final as the Diamond League circuit leader after a breakthrough year. He won four of his five Diamond League appearances, including victories in Rome, Doha, Lausanne, and Zurich. His world-leading throw of 92.62 meters in Rome in June established him among the top ten throwers of all time and propelled him to the world No. 1 ranking. The Diamond League crown adds to the Commonwealth Games gold medal he won earlier in the season. In the final, Pathirage had a slow start, opening with throws of 80.42 meters and 79.73 meters. Former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago took an early lead with a season-best 83.99 meters in the first round. Poland's Dawid Wegner then moved to the top with a personal best of 87.47 meters in the third round.
