The Springboks responded with tries from Damian de Allende and scrumhalf Morné van den Berg. New Zealand's Will Jordan scored just before the break to narrow the margin. South Africa seized control after the restart, with Malcolm Marx scoring from a lineout maul in the 49th minute and Pieter-Steph du Toit crossing four minutes later to extend the lead to 29-14. An Ethan Blackadder try brought New Zealand within eight points, but the Springboks sealed the win with two late tries.
