Sony Halts Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Mod Before Launch
A fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 has been canceled after Sony Interactive Entertainment sent a cease-and-desist letter to its creator. The modder, known as Speclizer, announced the cancellation on September 13, 2026, stating that the project, which had been in development since January, was no longer going to be released. "Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released," Speclizer wrote in a post on social media. "Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day but I hope youll continue to follow me onto the next project, this time something of my own." The mod was intended to recreate the Factions multiplayer experience from the original The Last of Us for the PC version of the sequel. Development had reached a significant milestone in July, with the project supporting 4v4 matches, a loadout system, multiple weapons and skills, five maps, and basic leaderboards. It was scheduled for a public release in September 2026.
