Sibiya faces five charges and remains in custody

Suspended Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya appeared at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, facing five charges including three counts of child sexual grooming, one count of trafficking in persons and one count of assault. The case involves allegations concerning a 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman. Sibiya, 59, was arrested on Monday, September 21, by members of the Madlanga Commission Recommendations Task Team, the unit set up to pursue recommendations from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Reports differ on the location of the arrest, with some accounts placing it at a strip club and an associate, Bishop Lazarus Maumela, stating that Sibiya was dining at a Sandton restaurant at the time. According to the State, Sibiya sexually groomed the 16-year-old through electronic communication between July and August 2026 and raped an 18-year-old woman at a Sandton hotel in May. The trafficking charge relates to allegations involving three people. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the matter was postponed to September 29 for a formal bail hearing, which the State will oppose.
