ShinyHunters claims FBI data theft, demands advisory be pulled

The hacking group ShinyHunters claimed on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, that it breached the Federal Bureau of Investigation and stole sensitive data on thousands of FBI employees and job applicants, demanding that the bureau rescind a May 2026 advisory about the group. The claim appeared in a statement posted to the group's darkweb site and in an online chat. ShinyHunters said it shared what it described as a sample of the stolen data and a screenshot of a vandalized FBI job site. The screenshot could not be independently verified. A message posted to the FBI job site on Tuesday said that the site and the FBI Special Agent Applicant Portal were unavailable. The FBI said it is aware of claims regarding unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov and is currently investigating, indicating the recruiting site may have been the vector. The bureau has not confirmed a breach of its internal systems and did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
