Senator Marshall Sued Hundreds of Patients, Led to Arrests

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, an obstetrician-gynecologist by profession, aggressively pursued hundreds of former patients for unpaid medical bills, employing tactics that included lawsuits, wage garnishments, and, in dozens of cases, leading to arrests, according to a report by The New York Times. The investigation found that Marshall, a Republican from Kansas, filed suits against more than 700 patients during his decades-long medical career, with 81 of those individuals being arrested for missed court dates. His practice, Heartland Regional OBGYN, also routinely charged an 18 percent annual interest rate on outstanding debts, which ranged from as little as $101 to several thousand dollars. Patients who spoke with The Times described living paycheck to paycheck, often forced to choose between paying medical bills and essential expenses like groceries. Some of the individuals sued were new mothers with bills stemming from childbirth or emergency procedures like hysterectomies and miscarriages requiring surgery.
