Senate Blocks Landmark Crypto Bill in 49-50 Vote
The U.S. Senate on Tuesday blocked a landmark cryptocurrency regulatory bill in a procedural vote, dealing a major setback to the industry's efforts to establish a clear federal framework for digital assets. The Clarity Act failed to advance after falling short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster, with the final tally at 49-50. The vote was a pivotal test for the $2.3 trillion cryptocurrency market and came after months of negotiations between lawmakers, the White House, and industry groups. The legislation aimed to create a comprehensive regulatory structure, dividing oversight between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to provide legal certainty for crypto firms. Democrats largely opposed the bill, citing insufficient ethics provisions to prevent President Donald Trump and his family from profiting from crypto ventures while in office. Trump reported over $1.4 billion in revenue from crypto businesses last year, including more than $500 million from World Liberty Financial, a firm co-founded with his special envoy Steve Witkoff.
