Semaglutide May Slow Aging, Extend Lifespan
Recent scientific findings suggest that semaglutide, a medication commonly prescribed for diabetes and weight loss, may also slow biological aging and potentially extend lifespan. Research published in the journal Nature indicates that the drug, a type of GLP-1 agonist, demonstrated these effects in studies involving both mice and a pilot group of human participants. In a study involving older, healthy female mice, semaglutide treatment was shown to extend median lifespan by approximately 100 days, or about 12 percent, compared to untreated mice. The drug also improved physiological functions, reduced hallmarks of aging such as inflammation, and enhanced regenerative capacity. When compared to calorie restriction, a known longevity-promoting intervention, semaglutide mimicked many of its antiaging benefits. In some areas, such as exploratory behavior, spatial memory, and blood sugar maintenance, semaglutide-treated mice even surpassed those on a restricted diet. Researchers noted that semaglutide appears to tap into a biological pathway that may be independent of calorie restriction, suggesting a distinct mechanism for its longevity-promoting effects.
