Seahawks Rule Out Sam Darnold for Week 2, Drew Lock to Start

Published 16 September 2026

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold has been ruled out for the team's Week 2 game against the Arizona Cardinals due to a glute injury, head coach Mike Macdonald announced Wednesday. Backup quarterback Drew Lock will start in his place, with rookie Jalen Milroe serving as the backup. Darnold suffered the injury on the fifth play of the Seahawks' season-opening 13-10 victory over the New England Patriots. A team spokesperson described it as a "very unique, soft-tissue injury," and medical scans confirmed no damage to the hip bone. The team does not plan to place Darnold on injured reserve, a move that would have required him to miss at least four games, indicating the organization expects a relatively short-term absence. "Drew's known he's going to start here for a while," Macdonald said. "So I'm looking forward to seeing him practice today, just like I am Sam when he's playing." Lock, 29, stepped in during the Week 1 win and completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown. His 45-yard scoring pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba tied the game in the fourth quarter, setting up the Seahawks' comeback. Lock has 28 career NFL starts and holds a 1-1 record as a starter for Seattle.
