Schmitt Accuses Smith of Perjury Over Basketball Game

Sen. Eric Schmitt accused former special counsel Jack Smith of perjury during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing after alleging Smith had attended an Atlanta Hawks basketball game on February 3, 2024. Smith denied attending the NBA game and said he remembered going to an Iowa-Maryland women’s college basketball game in Maryland. Sen. Amy Klobuchar said the teams’ schedules confirmed that game was played in Maryland on the same date. Schmitt asked whether Smith had been at an Atlanta game between the Hawks and the Golden State Warriors, linking the date to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and prosecutor Nathan Wade. Schmitt said purported messages from Smith’s team placed him at the game and briefly displayed a board with what he described as those messages. The display was removed before Smith could review it; when he asked to see it again, Schmitt did not put it back up. Schmitt then said he believed Smith had already perjured himself and called him a dirtbag. Smith said he did not believe he had been in Atlanta during the period in question, though he recalled that he might have connected through the airport. He denied meeting Willis or Wade.
