Salvadoran TPS Status Uncertain After Deadline

The immigration status of approximately 170,000 Salvadorans in the United States remained uncertain following a September 9 deadline, with conflicting information emerging regarding their Temporary Protected Status (TPS). While a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson stated that Salvadoran TPS holders retain protection pending further announcement, other reports indicated that protections were set to expire, creating significant confusion for beneficiaries and employers. TPS provides eligible individuals protection from deportation and authorization to work in the U.S. For many Salvadorans, this status has been in place for decades, originating in 1990 after the country's civil war and renewed following the 2001 earthquakes. The designation has been repeatedly extended over the years. However, the lack of a formal, published decision by the September 9 deadline has left many in limbo. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and E-Verify had instructed employers to log September 9 as the cutoff date for TPS related to El Salvador, despite no termination order appearing in the Federal Register.
