Sainz penalized three places for impeding Bottas at Spanish GP

Carlos Sainz will start the Spanish Grand Prix from 20th on the grid after receiving a three-place penalty for impeding Valtteri Bottas during qualifying. The penalty, issued by FIA stewards, drops the Williams driver from his original 17th-place position for Sunday's race at the Madrid circuit. The incident occurred during the closing minutes of the first qualifying session (Q1) at Turns 6 and 7. Stewards determined that Williams failed to inform Sainz that Bottas was on a flying lap behind him, and Sainz took no action to yield. The team's omission and the driver's lack of response constituted an unnecessary impediment under the FIA's sporting regulations. Sainz, who is racing at his home Grand Prix for the first time at the new Madrid venue, acknowledged the communication breakdown. He stated he received no team radio warning about Bottas's approach, describing the session as "very scrappy" and "very poor." Bottas confirmed the team did not alert Sainz, adding, "so he didn't know that I was coming." The penalty moves fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez, and Bottas each up one position on the starting grid.
