A controversial replay review overturned a New Orleans Saints defensive touchdown in the second quarter of their Week 1 game against the Detroit Lions, a decision that sparked widespread debate among players, fans, and officials. The play occurred midway through the second quarter at Ford Field with the Lions leading 7-0. Saints defensive end Chase Young hit Detroit quarterback Jared Goff as he was winding up to pass, knocking the ball loose. The ball traveled backward approximately 15 yards before Saints safety Jonas Sanker recovered it and ran it into the end zone for what was initially ruled a touchdown, which would have tied the game. However, after a replay review, officials overturned the call. They ruled that Goff had begun his forward throwing motion before contact from Young, making the play an incomplete forward pass rather than a fumble. NFL Vice President of Instant Replay Mark Butterworth explained the ruling in a postgame pool report. "If the defender contacts the passer prior to the passer starting his throwing motion, then it can be ruled as a backward pass," Butterworth said.
