Sacha Baron Cohen to Star in Tarantino Stage Play
Sacha Baron Cohen is set to star in Quentin Tarantino's first stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, according to trade reporting citing unnamed sources. The production will mark Tarantino's first professional stage play as a director and Cohen's stage debut, with the show planned to open at an as-yet-unnamed West End venue in spring 2027. An exact opening date is expected to be announced in the coming months. The play is described by producers as a rambunctious swashbuckling comedy of deception and disguise, set in 1830s Europe and inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen. Producers have said the story promises a celebration of theater and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino's distinctive style and wit. Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment are producing the show. Tarantino, 63, first revealed in 2024 that he was developing a play. He began writing the script in January 2025 and later confirmed he had finished it, with the title and release window announced in March. In an interview with The Times, producer Sonia Friedman praised the script, describing it as funny and inspired by classic swashbuckling stories.
