S&P Global to acquire blockchain security firm OpenZeppelin
S&P Global has agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin, a blockchain security firm whose open-source smart contract library has supported over $37 trillion in cumulative value transfers. The deal, announced on September 17, 2026, marks the ratings giant's second major digital asset transaction in three days, following its $110 million strategic investment in crypto market data provider Kaiko earlier in the week. The acquisition will see OpenZeppelin operate as a separate S&P Global business unit, retaining its name and its free, publicly maintained smart contract library. OpenZeppelin CEO and co-founder Demian Brener will continue to lead the company, reporting to S&P Global Ratings President Yann Le Pallec. Financial terms were not disclosed by either company. Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin provides security assessments and development services for blockchain protocols and financial institutions. Its technology supports infrastructure used by major stablecoins, tokenized funds, and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. The company has completed more than 900 security engagements, identifying over 10,000 vulnerabilities before projects reached production.
