Russian Businessman With Putin Ties Paid for Trump Jr. Wedding Events

Published 14 September 2026

Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman with close ties to President Vladimir Putin, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for post-wedding celebrations for Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, in the Bahamas in May 2026. The payments, which covered expenses including the rental of a private island and a fireworks display, have raised ethical concerns among experts and some U.S. officials regarding potential foreign influence. According to a financial investigation, Kremlev, the president of the International Boxing Association, funded the lavish weekend. The payments were made through IB Challenger, a Dubai-based entity affiliated with the IBA. The couple confirmed the financial support in a joint Instagram post, describing Kremlev as a "dear friend" who hosted two nights of celebrations after their private family wedding ceremony. Bettina Trump stated the weekend was a pre-planned "fun weekend with friends" that coincidentally became a wedding celebration after their original plans changed. "It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful," she wrote.
