Russia Orders German Consulate Goethe-Institut Shut

Russia has ordered the closure of the German consulate in St. Petersburg and remaining Goethe-Institut cultural centers in Russia, escalating a diplomatic dispute with Berlin. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, that the St. Petersburg consulate must cease operations by September 18, with all its staff required to leave Russian territory by the same date. The Goethe-Institut branches are also to be vacated by September 13. The dispute traces back to an incident on August 4, when an explosives-laden drone was discovered near Ukrainian cargo aircraft within the secure zone of LeipzigHalle Airport. Germany has accused Russia of being responsible for this attempted drone attack, which occurred at a key logistical hub used for supporting Ukraine. Moscow has denied involvement, calling the allegations fabricated and a provocation.
