Russia North Korea Open First Road Bridge

Russia and North Korea officially opened their first road bridge across their shared border on Monday, September 7, 2026, a development marking a significant deepening of ties between Moscow and Pyongyang. The one-kilometer bridge spans the Tumen River, connecting Khasan in Russia's Primorsky Krai with Tumangang in North Korea. The opening ceremony was attended virtually by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song. Mishustin described the new infrastructure as a "strong impetus for the development of trade, economic, scientific, technological, and cultural cooperation," hailing the bilateral relations as being at an unprecedented level of comprehensive strategic partnership. The bridge, which cost an estimated 9 billion rubles, is designed to handle up to 300 vehicles and 2,300 people daily, according to news agency Interfax. The crossing has been named in honor of Yakov Novichenko, a Soviet officer credited with saving North Korea's founder, Kim Il Sung, from an assassination attempt in 1946. This new road link supplements the existing "Friendship" railway bridge, built in 1959, which is located near the new crossing.
