Russell confirms Mercedes delaying engine penalty for upgrade

George Russell has confirmed that Mercedes is strategically delaying his engine penalty until the team introduces its upgraded power unit under the FIA's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) scheme. The move is designed to avoid Russell incurring two separate grid drops over the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The decision comes as Mercedes leads both the constructors' and drivers' championships, with Russell's teammate Kimi Antonelli holding a 66-point advantage. However, reliability issues have forced both drivers to exceed their permitted power unit component allocations. Antonelli served his penalty at the Italian Grand Prix, starting 19th on the grid before executing a remarkable comeback victory. Speaking ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, Russell explained the tactical reasoning. "We're waiting to take my penalty with the ADUO upgrade. Otherwise, if I took it there in Monza, I'd have to take it again. So it made zero sense for me," he said. The ADUO upgrade is expected to be introduced at either the United States or Mexico City Grand Prix in late October.
