Romania Detains Former Presidential Candidate Georgescu in Fraud Probe

Romanian authorities detained former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu on Monday, September 21, 2026, and searched five properties in connection with a fraud investigation, according to the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT). Georgescu, who won the first round of Romania's 2024 presidential election before the vote was annulled, was stopped in traffic in the morning and taken to his home in Mogoșoaia while officers executed search warrants. He was subsequently brought to DIICOT headquarters for questioning. Prosecutors allege that a group led by Georgescu defrauded a businessman of over 1.1 million euros by promising a bank loan that never materialized. According to DIICOT's statement, the scheme began in September 2021, when a group of three individuals, including a 64-year-old Romanian identified as the leader, posed as foreign financiers. They allegedly convinced the victim to provide cash guarantees for a promised loan of 6 million euros, which was later increased to 15 million euros, requiring an additional guarantee. The financing was never provided.
