Director Ridley Scott has denied reports that he blamed actor Paul Mescal for the underperformance of the 2024 film Gladiator II and subsequently replaced him in his next movie, The Dog Stars. The clarification comes after a new report alleged Scott was unhappy with Mescal's performance and felt he was not "masculine enough" for the role. According to a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, a representative for Scott unequivocally denied the claims. The statement also pushed back on the suggestion that these alleged feelings influenced the decision to cast Jacob Elordi instead of Mescal in The Dog Stars, which opened in theaters on August 28, 2026. The explanation aligns with Scott's own previous comments. Mescal had been expected to star in the post-apocalyptic thriller, but his schedule became crowded after he was cast as Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes' upcoming four-part Beatles biopic series. During a Directors Guild of America event in late 2024, Scott acknowledged the conflict, stating that Mescal was "stacked up with the Beatles movies" and that he might have to let him go from The Dog Stars.
