Director Zach Cregger has revealed that the ending of his new Resident Evil film was significantly altered from its original script, a change he credits with improving the story's emotional impact. The film, which has received strong critical reviews and performed well at the box office, follows Bryan, a medical courier who becomes infected during a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City. In the released version, Bryan's quest to deliver a cure sample leads to a tragic climax where he mutates into a monster but retains some humanity, pleading for the scientists to inject him with the antidote. The final scientist fails, and Bryan is killed, with his mutated form later approached by National Guard helicopters. Cregger explained in a recent interview that the original ending was far bleaker. In that version, the cure was destroyed early in the final sequence, and Bryan completely lost his humanity, killing all the scientists without any hope of salvation. Cregger described this original conclusion as a "misstep." To revise the ending, Cregger utilized a contingency scene he had filmed, which showed a scientist pocketing the cure.
