Record diesel prices split Republicans and White House

Diesel prices hit a record high of about $6.50 a gallon on Monday, according to AAA, intensifying pressure on President Donald Trump from rural Republicans to ban U.S. diesel exports while the White House says it is not considering such a move. Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa kicked off the calls over the weekend, writing on X that "High diesel prices ARE KILLING FARMERS INCOME" and asking why Trump does not embargo diesel exports as presidents did with agricultural products in the 1970s. Rep. Ashley Hinson of Iowa, Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, Rep. Zach Nunn of Iowa, Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee and Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry have joined the push, with Landry calling for a 90-day moratorium and Burchett introducing legislation on the House floor. Democrat Josh Turek, in a competitive Iowa Senate race, has also called for an export ban. A White House official said the administration is not considering an export ban or export restrictions at this time.
