Real Madrid suffer first La Liga defeat

Published 5 September 2026

Real Madrid suffered their first defeat of the La Liga season on Friday, September 4, 2026, falling 1-0 to Real Betis at Estadio La Cartuja in Seville. The loss marked a significant setback for manager Jose Mourinho's second spell at the club, ending their perfect start to the campaign. The decisive goal came in the 81st minute from substitute Troy Parrott. The Republic of Ireland international reacted quickest to a rebound after Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois parried a header, slotting the ball home from close range. Parrott, who joined Betis this summer from AZ Alkmaar, scored his first goal for the club. Real Madrid dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match, but were unable to find the net. Kylian Mbappe had the clearest chance to equalize in stoppage time when Real Madrid was awarded a penalty after Vinicius Junior was fouled. However, Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles guessed correctly and saved Mbappe's spot-kick, preserving the lead for the home side.
