President Cyril Ramaphosa warned that police killings threaten South Africa's stability as he officiated the annual South African Police Service Commemoration Day on Sunday, September 6, 2026. The ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria honored 12 police officers who died in the line of duty during the financial year from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The event brought together families, friends, and colleagues to remember the fallen officers, whose names are engraved on the SAPS Memorial Site. Ramaphosa declared that the nation gathers in grief and resolve, remembering the officers not as statistics but as sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers who went to work to protect their fellow South Africans and never returned home. He emphasized that behind every police killing is a family story that has been permanently rewritten, citing examples such as a wife pregnant when her husband was killed and a family left with seven-month-old twins.
