Raina criticizes IPL Impact Player rule

Former India and Chennai Super Kings star Suresh Raina has publicly criticized the Indian Premier League's Impact Player rule, arguing it has severely unbalanced the tournament in favor of batters and placed an unfair burden on bowlers. Speaking on a podcast, Raina stated his opposition to the regulation, which was introduced in 2023 and allows teams to make one substitution during a match, often using an extra specialist batter. Raina contended that the rule has fundamentally altered the competitive landscape, making massive scores routine and diminishing the role of bowlers. He pointed out that even fit players now bat and are then substituted out, avoiding fielding duties, which he believes hinders player development. "I am against the Impact player rule. A lot of fit players also bat and just sit down. How will you improve?" Raina said. He noted that while 170 was once a competitive total, scores of 250 are now regularly chased, and even 300-run innings have become possible. "Leave something for the bowlers. There is no wicket-taking option," he added. The rule's impact is evident in recent IPL seasons.
