Rain-triggered landslide damages homes in Sikkim’s Rimbi

A landslide triggered by heavy rain damaged or destroyed several houses in Rimbi, in West Sikkim’s Gyalshing district, late Thursday, officials said. The full extent of the damage was still being assessed on Friday, and no casualties had been reported in the accounts available that day. The slide sent mud, rocks and other debris down from upper slopes toward inhabited areas. Some damaged buildings included government accommodation, according to officials. Footage and captions circulated by ANI described more than 30 houses as affected, but that figure came from a single shared account; other reporting described several houses, and authorities had not provided a completed assessment. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said the situation in Rimbi remained serious and directed authorities to stay on high alert and monitor conditions. He urged residents to follow official advisories and remain cautious while heavy rain continued. The district administration was assessing damage and undertaking debris-clearance and restoration work, with concerns focused on homes, infrastructure and road access.
