Ponting Predicts ODI Cricket Decline Amid T20 Rise

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has predicted that One Day International (ODI) cricket is likely to be played less frequently in the future, citing the continued expansion of Twenty20 (T20) internationals and franchise leagues. Ponting, a distinguished former ODI player, expressed reservations about this potential shift, stating that while he is not a fan of the direction, it appears inevitable given the increasingly crowded international cricket calendar. The sport faces competition for space from bilateral series, T20 leagues, and major ICC tournaments, leading to difficult choices for scheduling. Ponting contrasted the outlook for ODIs with that of Test cricket, which he believes will remain strong as long as leading nations like India, Australia, and England continue to prioritize it. "Something's got to give somewhere," Ponting told PTI. "Test cricket is still going to remain strong as long as India, Australia, England and probably South Africa want Test cricket to remain strong. It will. So something's got to give. And the obvious one is 50over cricket." Data since January 2021 illustrates a trend towards more T20 internationals.
