Police Officer Shot Dead in Amritsar Compensation Announced
An Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Punjab Police was fatally shot by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants in Amritsar while performing night patrol duty in the early hours of Friday, September 18, 2026. The officer, identified as ASI Harjit Singh, was a resident of Tarn Taran and was deployed with the Police Control Room under the Gate Hakima police station jurisdiction. The attack occurred near the Bhagtanwala grain market area when two assailants opened fire on Singh, who sustained critical gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Police teams quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area and collect forensic evidence. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1 crore to the family of the deceased officer. Additionally, HDFC Bank will provide an additional Rs 1 crore insurance compensation. Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav expressed condolences and stated that the martyr would be accorded full police honours. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and an investigation is underway.
