Police officer and woman shot near Notre Dame campus, suspect at large

A shooting near the University of Notre Dame injured a woman and a police officer on Saturday night, September 19, 2026, prompting a temporary shelter-in-place order that was later lifted. The incident occurred at Eddy Street Commons, a busy retail district adjacent to the campus, just before the kickoff of the Notre Dame vs. Michigan State football game. The South Bend Police Department reported that around 7:30 p.m., officers were notified by Notre Dame Police that a man had been seen pointing a gun at people. Police located a suspect matching the description, but he was unarmed at the time. As approximately 20 South Bend officers remained in the area investigating that report, a single gunshot was heard near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard. Officers found a woman with a gunshot wound to the leg and a South Bend police officer injured by a ricochet or shrapnel. Both were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover. A third person was injured during a fight that preceded the shooting but was not struck by gunfire, according to police.
