Police Detain Officers Over Fatal Shooting in Rivers

Police in Nigeria's Rivers State have detained a corporal and other officers following the fatal shooting of a motorist, Anthony Obodo, during an altercation in Port Harcourt. The incident, which occurred on August 27, 2026, has sparked protests and prompted a police investigation. According to the Rivers State Police Command, preliminary findings indicate that an altercation and scuffle took place between Obodo, a 22-year-old recent graduate of the University of Port Harcourt, and a police officer identified as Corporal Alfred Louis. During the confrontation, a firearm was discharged. The bullet struck Obodo, killing him, and injured at least two passersby.
