Police Arrest 46 Over Convoy Blockade of Peter Obi

Benue State Police Command has arrested 46 individuals in connection with the obstruction of Peter Obi's convoy during his visit to the state on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate was blocked along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway, preventing him from reaching Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area. Obi had stated his visit was intended to offer sympathy to families affected by killings in Yelwata. Commissioner of Police Cletus Nwadiogbu announced the arrests on Wednesday, stating that intelligence-led operations were immediately launched after the incident. He explained that security personnel, including three police escort vehicles led by an assistant commissioner, were deployed for Obi's visit. However, a group blocked the convoy, creating tension that police feared could escalate into violence. Nwadiogbu said officers made a tactical decision to avoid using force to prevent loss of life or property damage, subsequently escorting Obi safely back to the airport for his departure from the state. The Benue State Government has denied any involvement in the blockade.
