Poland Parliament Fails to Override Crypto Veto

Published 5 September 2026

Poland's effort to regulate its cryptocurrency market hit another roadblock on September 5, 2026, when parliament failed to override President Karol Nawrocki's veto of a key bill. The Sejm voted 241 to 198 in favor of overturning the veto, with three abstentions, but fell 25 votes short of the required two-thirds majority of 266. This marks the third time Nawrocki has rejected the legislation, leaving Poland as the only European Union member state without a fully functioning domestic framework for implementing the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA. The vetoed bill would have designated the Polish Financial Supervision Authority, KNF, as the primary regulator for the country's crypto sector. It aimed to establish a licensing system for crypto firms, grant the KNF powers to block accounts and freeze transactions for up to 96 hours, and impose fees on crypto-token issuers. President Nawrocki has consistently argued that the proposed rules are excessive and could drive Polish crypto businesses to relocate to other EU countries. He has also criticized provisions allowing authorities to block websites and restrict company activities.
