Pilot warned plane too fast before Miami runway crash

A pilot of the Amazon-branded cargo plane that overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday repeatedly warned that the aircraft was flying too fast in the minutes before the crash, according to a summary of cockpit voice recordings released Wednesday by the National Transportation Safety Board. The Boeing 767, operated by cargo carrier 21 Air, was landing on Runway 30 when it overran the runway by about 1,300 feet, crashed through a fence and struck a van belonging to a company that cleans planes at the airport. All five workers inside the van were killed. The plane then hit an SUV before catching fire. Five other people were injured, two of whom remained in critical condition this week. The victims were identified as Rolando Aleman Leon, 55, Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53, Julio C. Pineda, 75, Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53, and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47. The two injured workers in critical condition were identified as Ridoel Averhoff Diaz, 32, and Roosevelt Sebastian Perdomo Torres, 36. According to the NTSB summary, one minute and 42 seconds before the recording ended, one of the pilots cautioned that the plane was too fast.
