Pietersen Joins England White-Ball Coaching Staff

Published 9 September 2026

Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as a specialist mentor for England's white-ball teams, a move that Test captain Joe Root believes will significantly benefit the squad as they prepare for the 2027 Cricket World Cup. Pietersen, who last played for England in 2014, will join head coach Brendon McCullum's staff for upcoming series, including a white-ball tour against Sri Lanka next week. Root, the only current England player to have shared a dressing room with Pietersen, expressed his enthusiasm for the former batter's return. He recalled Pietersen's invaluable guidance during his own early international career, particularly on his first tour of India in 2012. "He was really open, really honest, very helpful in terms of how to get the best out of my game against spin," Root stated, reflecting on how Pietersen would offer advice and work with him in the nets. "If he can offer that kind of stuff in a coaching capacity, as he did as a senior player, then I think it is really going to benefit us as a group," Root added, emphasizing Pietersen's potential to positively impact the team's environment.
