Piers Morgan plans to sue Earl Spencer over memoir claims

Piers Morgan announced on September 21, 2026, that he is taking legal action against Earl Spencer and his publishers over claims made in Spencer's new memoir, Swan Song Diana, My Sister. The broadcaster stated he was instructing solicitors to contact the publisher, Penguin, over what he called "demonstrable lies" in the book. The dispute centers on allegations in Spencer's memoir that Morgan was involved in the publication of photographs of Princess Diana exercising at a gym in 1993. Spencer also claims that Morgan "snarled with annoyance" when Spencer telephoned newspaper editors to ask them not to attend Diana's funeral in 1997. Morgan has disputed the account of his involvement in the gym photographs. He pointed out that the pictures were published by the Sunday Mirror in November 1993, while he did not join the Daily Mirror until October 1995. Morgan stated that at the time of the gym pictures, he was working for The Sun, not the Mirror. He called the passage in the book "all bullshit" and argued the discrepancy was easy to establish. Morgan said he wanted the disputed account removed from the book and a donation made to the King's Trust.
