Pierce Brosnan to leave Malibu home over wildfire fears

Published 12 September 2026

Actor Pierce Brosnan and his wife Keely Shaye Smith are preparing to leave their Malibu home after 26 years, citing fears of natural disasters and the high cost of maintaining the property. Brosnan, 73, told The Times in an interview published on September 11, 2026, that the couple has decided it is time to move on from their oceanfront estate. "We've been spared by the fires a few times now. But I think it's time to move. Everything changes, everything falls apart," Brosnan said. He added that living on a fault line in an area prone to earthquakes and wildfires creates an underlying sense of unease. "We live by this body of earth's water on a fault in a ring of earthquakes. That creates a fear." The decision comes after a series of close calls and financial pressures. In January 2025, the Palisades Fire burned more than 23,000 acres across Los Angeles and its surrounding suburbs, destroying thousands of structures and claiming at least 27 lives. While Brosnan's home was spared, the event underscored the risks of living in the area. In 2015, a fire in the property's garage caused an estimated $1 million in damage while the family was home.
