Piddington Village Votes Symbolic Independence Over Asylum Plan

Residents of the small Oxfordshire village of Piddington voted overwhelmingly in a symbolic referendum to declare independence from the United Kingdom, protesting government plans to house 1,256 male asylum seekers at a nearby former military base. The unofficial vote, announced on Wednesday, saw 285 residents support secession with 26 voting against, on a turnout of nearly 92 percent in the village of about 350 people. The referendum is legally non-binding and carries no constitutional weight, but it has become a focal point for local opposition and a wider national debate about asylum accommodation. The government intends to use the Urgent Crown Development Process to potentially bypass local planning authorities for the conversion of the disused MoD Bicester site. Senior minister Jonathan Reynolds defended the policy, stating that former military sites are more suitable than hotels and that asylum seekers must be shared across the nation. "Where in the UK would want more of this? We've got to share this throughout the entire nation," he said.
