Philadelphia Air Traffic Outage Grounds Flights at Major NY Airports

A technical outage at an air traffic control facility in Philadelphia triggered widespread ground stops and delays at major New York-area airports on Monday, disrupting travel during the United Nations General Assembly. The Federal Aviation Administration issued ground stops at Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, Philadelphia International, and Teterboro airports due to an equipment issue at the Philadelphia TRACON facility. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford stated the outage occurred because the primary circuit failed at the Philadelphia facility, which guides flights into and out of the Newark and Philadelphia airports. He added that the backup fiber optic cable had been cut, a repair expected to take about 13 hours. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and a Verizon spokesman attributed the fiber cut to an Amtrak construction crew working in the area. The disruption caused hundreds of flight cancellations and delays. FlightAware data showed Newark experienced significant cancellations, with about 209 scheduled departures and a similar number of arrivals canceled as of early afternoon.
