Peter Obi convoy blocked in Benue Sep 8
Youths blocked the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, preventing him from reaching the Yelwata community in Benue State for a planned humanitarian visit. The incident occurred near Gboko Road in Makurdi, where a crowd barricaded the route, chanting slogans against Obi and halting his movement for over an hour. Obi, who intended to visit families affected by killings in Yelwata in June 2025, eventually proceeded to Plateau State after failing to reach his destination. Obi stated at the scene that he had been informed the youths were mobilized by a Special Assistant to the state government. "I was told that youths, led by an SA to the government, have decided to block the road and make sure I don't go there," Obi said. "The rascality they are bringing into this country is totally unacceptable." The Benue State Government denied any involvement. Chief Press Secretary Tersoo Kula said the administration "neither engages nor deploys thugs as instruments of governance or security.
