Perplexity adds local-first mode to its Mac AI app

Published 21 October 2026

Perplexity has introduced a local-first mode for its Computer Mac app, allowing the AI model and the agent that directs tasks to run on Apple silicon Macs. The feature became available October 20 to Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers, with cloud access requiring user approval, according to the company. The local mode offers Qwen 3.6 and PPLX Pro, which Perplexity describes as a post-trained version of Qwen. The company says the model can plan and reason on the Mac and process local files without sending them to remote servers. Users can also choose cloud processing when a task calls for online services or additional capabilities. With permission, Computer can work with supported apps including Notes, Messages, Mail and Numbers. Perplexity’s example workflow includes reviewing messages and emails for deadlines and creating an action list in Notes. The company also says local operation can function without an internet connection, though browsing, current information and online services require network access. Perplexity recommends an Apple silicon Mac with at least 36 GB of unified memory for local use. It presents that figure as guidance, not a strict eligibility threshold....
