Pediatric physician Idris Evans dies after Edgewood stabbing

Dr. Idris Evans, a 46-year-old pediatric critical-care physician, died after he and his wife were stabbed in their Edgewood, Pennsylvania, home early Thursday, September 24, police said. His wife was hospitalized in critical condition, and their children, ages 8 and 12, escaped to a neighbor’s home and were physically unharmed, according to authorities. Allegheny County police identified Elijah Hemingway, 32, as the suspect. He faces charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass, police said. Hemingway was injured and taken to a hospital after officers found him behind a nearby home, according to authorities. He remained hospitalized pending transfer to the Allegheny County Jail, police said Thursday. Officers responded shortly after midnight to the couple’s home and found both with multiple stab wounds. Evans was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His wife was also hospitalized. A police official described the scene as violent, with broken bedroom furniture and mirrors. According to the wife’s account in a criminal complaint, the couple awoke to a man attacking them in bed with a kitchen knife.
