Patrick Reed, the leader in the Race to Dubai standings, withdrew from the BMW PGA Championship on Friday after suffering a wrist injury during the second round at Wentworth Club. The American golfer was forced to pull out on the 9th hole after hitting from the rough near tree roots, leaving him in visible pain and ending his tournament abruptly. Reed had entered the event with a substantial lead of nearly 900 points over Rory McIlroy in the season-long Race to Dubai competition. His withdrawal means he will earn zero points from this event, potentially allowing McIlroy to close the gap. McIlroy, who is competing at Wentworth, was in a strong position to capitalize on Reed's misfortune. The injury occurred after Reed hit a shot from the deep rough on the 9th hole. Reports indicate that his club flew out of his hands upon impact, and he was seen clutching his left wrist and left shoulder. Despite attempting to continue, Reed withdrew after hitting his tee shot on the 10th hole, exchanging scorecards with his playing partners before being taken off the course. Reed's second round had already been disastrous before the injury.
