Patagonia attracts AI data center interest

Argentina's remote Patagonia region is emerging as a potential hub for large artificial intelligence data centers, attracting interest from major technology companies due to its cool climate, abundant energy resources, and available land. Established data center locations in North America and Europe are facing limitations in power, land, and capacity, prompting developers to look for new frontiers. Patagonia offers a strategic advantage with its natural cooling capabilities, reducing energy consumption for data centers. The region boasts significant renewable energy potential, including hydroelectric power, wind, and solar, alongside shale gas reserves from the Vaca Muerta formation. Companies like Pampa Energía are planning facilities of up to 500 megawatts in Neuquén province, while Polish firm Green Capital intends to develop a substantial project in Chubut, potentially reaching 3,000 megawatts over time. FlexDomes, a U.S.-based green data center company, is also exploring a 120-megawatt facility in Neuquén.
